According to the "Notes from the AI frontier" report by McKinsey Global Institute (04/2018), performance of traditional analytic techniques can be improved. This report shows how 69 percent of studied use-cases can be improved by applying deep neural networks. From this 69 percent, 16 percent of these studied use-cases only neural networks can improve the performance. For the remaining 15 percent, deep learning provided limited additional performance over other techniques.

I hear you think "Let's use deep neural networks!". However the requirements for data are much greater than that of other analytics techniques. Not only are data types often multi-dimensional like image, video, audio or speech, but also the size of training sets tends to be much larger.
